SOUTH KOREA SETS THE EXAMPLE

"If every country recycled as much of its paper as South Korea does, the amount of wood pulp used to produce paper worldwide would drop by one third." Quote from the writer in this link http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=46494 Apparently China recycled 33% of its paper while Finland 38%. South Korea leads the pack with 77% followed by the runners-up Germany ,66% . America is undoubtedly the largest user of paper but way behind Korea in the percentage in recycling . However it improved from 25% in 1980 to 50% 2005.
I wonder how is it in Malaysia? If you know give me the facts.

Banana Paper ?
The last time I came across paper made from bananas was in an exhibition in Frankfurt about 15 years ago. It was  a  South American company , possibly, a Brazillian one. Anyway now we have the same paper from an Australian factory based in Queensland but with an envirnmental plus. It is ecologically sustainable.
Made from banana trunk this paper process does not require chemicals and  it does not need extra land. Nutritionists advise us that bananas are good for our health. It contains lots of potassium, fibres etc. Maybe if we eat more bananas there will be more banana plantations and more trunks will be made into paper.  If supply overtakes demand then paper price will drop!! Sounds great. Follow this link for more  http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/04/06/2535565.htm?section=business

'Green Nobel' for forest champion

Though paper is made from pulp extracted from trees, indiscriminate deforestation of the earth  without regards to the environment and the socio-economic impact to the people living there is unkind to the environment. An environment-friendly paper should be paper from well a managed forest. We are reminded of this passion to care for the surroundings by one brave African .Marc Ona Essangui [no relation to the present writer] was honoured for his fight to stop what he describes as a destructive mining project in the Ivindo National Park. This Goldman award was given to several other couragous souls fighting for the environment. Read  more   in  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8000936.stm

SOME  U. S. PAPER  MILLS  GOING  "UNGREEN" ?

In this global recession many lofty ideals get compromised. Traditionally, mills get energy
from burning "black liquid" which is a by-product of the pulp-making process[ pulp is the raw material to make paper].  Recently the U.S. government initiated a tax-rebate for using less fossil fuels. Instead of coal or other fossils , diesel is encouraged. So millions of dollars are given out to companies that add some diesel into the "black liquid". Some companies' entire profit is made more or less of this rebate. In fact the total pay out is 6 billion USD.  It is controversial ! . One can argue this act will retain jobs, feed family, lessen the crime rate and suicides ....The counter argument is you are keeping the letter of the law but not the spirit.

RECYCLED PAPER MADE OF SHIT !!!

Paper made from 100% post-consumer waste. How environment friendly. Wombat poo is now made into paper. Wombat is a small animal found in Tasmania, Australia. Wow!. We heard of drinking urine for health. How about using Wombat poo A4 on your copier machine for the environment?. Apparently this dung paper is a hit amongst tourists and the paper actually gives off an organic smell . Then who needs Calvin Klein ! .
